Lymphoedema Therapy

What is Lymphoedema?

Lymphoedema is the accumulation of protein rich fluid which results in swelling in one or more regions of the body. This occurs because the lymphatic system fails to drain lymph as it should, which results in the lymphatic system becoming overloaded.

The excess fluid and proteins in the tissue cause swelling and decrease the amount of oxygen available to the cells.
The extra proteins cause inflammation and can lead to further cell damage if lymphoedema is not treated.

Any oedema that does not resolve in 3 months is indicative of lymphoedema. Lymphoedema is a progressive disease and early intervention is recommended to minimise time and age-related changes.

There are two types of Lymphoedema:

  • PRIMARY - caused by structural problems with the lymphatic system such as vessels which pump sluggishly, or an insufficient number of vessels, or both.

  • SECONDARY - caused by obstructions in the lymphatic drainage system. This may be due to surgery (particularly cancer-related surgery where lymph nodes are removed) ,radiotherapy, trauma, parasites, lack of movement, allergic reactions.

What to expect from a Lymphoedema consultation?

Lymphoedema consultations are up to 60 minutes in duration and can include:

  • Education and advice or managing your specific condition

  • Manual lymphatic drainage

  • Limb measurements

  • Prescription of compression garments or bandaging

Each consultation is individualised to your specific needs and is in line with the most current evidence based research.
