Dry Needling
Dry needling is a form of treatment that involves the use of fine, thin needles to stimulate underlying trigger points in the muscles and fascia. The procedure is performed to alleviate pain and improve function in patients with a range of musculoskeletal conditions. To perform dry needling, Osteopaths undergo specific training.
Benefits of Dry Needling
Local Effects
Inserting the needle into a specific structure increases blood flow to the area and invokes the body’s normal injury (local inflammatory) response and subsequent tissue healing.
Spinal Segmental Effects
When a needle is inserted into a particular structure, it not only has an effect at the location, but also the spinal level that the structure correlates to. This in turn down-regulates the pain signals from that level, which leads to less pain perceived at structures innervated by that spinal level.
Dry needling may help with:
Acute neck and back pain
Lumbar disc bulge and nerve pain
Lateral epicondylitis (tennis elbow)
Tension (trigger points) in the neck and shoulders
Ankle instability
Shoulder injuries
Fibromyalgia
Trochanteric bursitis
Heel pain (plantar fascia pain)
Post operative pain
A large portion of our team are trained in dry needling and find it incredibly beneficial to incorporate into their regular osteopathy consultation.
